Phonosemantic compound. 灬 represents the meaning and 肰 represents the sound. Based on the original meaning "ignite; burn", now written as 燃. The current meaning is a phonetic loan. 后 (empress) and its mirror image 司 (take charge) were originally used interchangeably. The origin of both characters is unclear. In simplified Chinese 后 is also used to mean "after, behind", while in traditional Chinese this meaning is written with a separate character 後. These notes explain the characters’ formation.
