“可”的历史构形可以这样理解：口主要提示意义范围；◎以图像或会意方式参与构形。这些部件的作用依据历史字形判断，不等同于今天看到的任意笔画组合。 “惜”属于会意或指事来源，字形中的部件共同提示意义。现代可见结构是 忄 + 昔；学习时应理解整体关系，而不是把每一笔都解释成独立词义。 以上是各字的历史构形说明；“可惜”作为现代词语时，应结合完整词义学习，不能把单字意义机械相加。

The right component is a pictograph of an axe handle, now written as 柯 (kē). 口 (mouth) was added later to indicate that the character is only "mouthed", i.e. only used for its phonetic value. 惜 is ideographic in origin.
