What to learn first as a Chinese beginner
Begin with pronunciation and a compact set of high-frequency words. Pinyin helps you identify Mandarin sounds, while characters connect those sounds to written Chinese. Learn them together: a word, its Pinyin, one clear English meaning, and one short example.
Use HSK 1 as a practical starting collection, but do not treat a vocabulary list as a complete course. Listening, sentence patterns, speaking, and review must develop alongside word knowledge.

A realistic 20-minute daily routine
Spend five minutes reviewing yesterday’s difficult words. Spend five minutes on new words with sound and examples. Spend five minutes listening to a short song section or reading a character lesson. Finish with five minutes of retrieval in a game or without visible answers.
Keep the batch small enough that old material still receives attention. Progress comes from repeated successful retrieval across days, not from the number of pages opened in one sitting.
What online Chinese study cannot replace
Online tools are excellent for repetition, reference, listening, and self-testing. They cannot fully diagnose your speaking, interaction, or individual exam needs. When possible, combine independent study with conversation and feedback from a qualified teacher or language partner.

Can I learn Chinese online for free?

Should I learn Mandarin or Chinese?
Mandarin is the standard spoken variety taught by most Chinese-learning courses. Written Chinese uses characters and is shared more widely, although pronunciation varies across Chinese varieties.
How long does it take to learn Chinese?
It depends on your goal and study consistency. A daily routine with listening, vocabulary, characters, and active recall is more predictive than a fixed number of months.
