Classic HSK 1–6 vs new HSK 3.0
The official HSK website describes the newer framework as three stages and nine bands. The familiar HSK system uses six levels and remains common in textbooks, older vocabulary lists, and learner searches. Because test requirements can change during a transition, confirm the format and syllabus for your own test date.

What HSK measures—and what a vocabulary list cannot measure
HSK is a Chinese-language proficiency test used by learners, schools, and other institutions. Vocabulary levels are useful study milestones, but a real test also depends on listening, reading, grammar, timing, and the current task format.
A word count cannot show whether you can recognise a word in natural speech, understand it inside a sentence, or retrieve it without an English prompt. Treat the level as a map and use several forms of practice before deciding that the vocabulary is active.
Why HSK word counts differ between websites
Some lists show cumulative vocabulary through a level; others show only the words added at that level. Revised standards, duplicate handling, regional forms, and editorial choices can also change the number shown. A useful resource should name its framework and explain what its count represents.

Vocabulary targets are milestones, not the whole exam
Knowing a list helps reading and listening only when words become fast to recognise. Hear each item, say it, notice common combinations, and use it in a short sentence. Then practise identifying it without Pinyin or English visible.

Choose the next action, not just the next level

Advancing works best when the current level is usable across several modes. A smaller active vocabulary is more valuable than a larger list that can only be recognised in one direction.
